Careers
Teamwork, a non-hierarchical organization structure and transparency at MART has ensured a spirit of oneness and belonging among employees. Says Kashyap: “Family is the most durable social organisation and it is our families that give us our identity. MART aspires to be the same for people who choose to work with it. As in a family, here too everyone has a role and is a significant contributor – whether he or she prepares tea or heads a project. We are all equal and everyone has a say in the projects or assignments taken on, the commitment we give our clients, and so on. The only privilege I have as the CEO is deciding on people’s performance, but that too is transparent – everyone knows what the other earns and why.” And while he’s doing that, you might just catch Kashyap making tea for his team at the office.
The Growth Path at MART
The most exciting aspect of building a career at MART is the opportunity for holistic learning. Employees are exposed to both corporate and development sector cultures and issues. Learning about market-driven practices on an MNC assignment or improving the quality of life of the rural poor is an opportunity that few organisations can offer.
For freshers who choose to join MART learning on the job and taking responsibility for assignments and projects takes place simultaneously. The diversified sectors, clients and projects that MART works in ensure a steep learning curve for new members. And the opportunity to work in different functions – research, strategy, innovation, implementation and training- allows one to become efficient multi-taskers.
Mid-level employees in MART have the satisfaction of leading projects independently while building teams and nurturing younger colleagues. MART enables employees not to just build their careers but in the process become risk-taking, challenges seeking intrapreneurs’. In addition to these in-company entrepreneurs, MART has nurtured employees to become full fledged independent entrepreneurs.
Since 2007, MART offers employees – those who have overall experience of over 10 years, of which 5 years should have been in MART – an equity stake in the organisation. This model, feels Kashyap, will help nurture entrepreneurial qualities among employees as well as develop a sense of ownership in MART’s initiatives.
Perhaps the biggest testament to the success of MART’s unique work culture is that some employees who left the organization in search of greener pastures have returned to MART. Says Pankaj Mishra who after working in MART for 5 years went to another company but rejoined MART in 2006: “What makes MART distinct is the sense of belonging that it inspires in each of us. Every MART-ian is nurtured as a family member and has the opportunity to give shape to their thoughts and ideas while learning and improving continuously.”
Internships
MART regularly offers internships to management graduates and students. Working on a ‘student project’ is just as rigorous as working on a client-commissioned project. Senior members of MART guide the students in their project, review their work and offer feedback with utmost seriousness. This learning environment enables students to gain hands-on experience and turn in quality work. It is therefore not surprising that Anirban Bose and Vikram Bhalla of MDI, Gurgaon won the prestigious Best Marketing Summer Project in 2001, in an award ceremony organized by IIM Kolkata where many prestigious management schools had also participated.
As we see it, opting for a career in MART is win-win-win partnership – where the winners include the employee, the organisation and the client.
